Paperman Media (Bhubaneswar)- While the nationwide movement by the student community over the recent question paper leak incidents has affected the entire country, the Union Cabinet today approved amendments to the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024. Responding to this development, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) questioned the effectiveness of the implementation of these amendments.
Addressing a press conference at Sankha Bhawan today, the party's Spokesperson and Media Coordinator, Dr. Lenin Mohanty, stated that more than 150 question paper leak incidents have occurred across the country during the last 12 years, triggering widespread protests and movements across India. While this nationwide agitation has deeply affected the people of the country, the Union Cabinet has now approved amendments to the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024. The proposed amendments provide for stricter punishment for irregularities such as question paper leaks.
Dr. Mohanty further stated that merely passing a law will not resolve this crisis. To prevent incidents such as question paper leaks and to ensure that the guilty are punished, it is essential that the law is implemented in a strict, impartial, and effective manner. In Odisha as well, the BJP Government had passed the Odisha Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Bill, 2024 in the State Legislative Assembly on 6 December 2024. However, despite the fact that 23 question paper leak incidents have surfaced during the last two years under the double-engine government, not a single accused has been punished so far.
This clearly demonstrates that merely enacting stringent laws is not sufficient. The only permanent solution to the serious problem of question paper leaks is to ensure the sincere and effective implementation of the law, along with swift and exemplary punishment against those found guilty.
